[11 Jun 2009|02:13pm] |
This week I got an unexpected phone call. A friend called if I'd like to participate in a little preformance this weekend. my very first Opera. XD Well, I am available this saturday, not having to work and all, so I said Yes. It will be in the Noorderkerk, Akkerstraat 28, Groningen.
And for those who know my singing voice, do not be alarmed, I shall not be singing, allthough there will be some partial nackedness, I've been informed...
I'll let you folks now how it turns out.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Turns out.... not to be.
So much for my first Opera. They found someone more fitting with the overall look of the thing. And the fact I couldn't really rehearse but at the general rehersal couse of work. To bad, so sad. :) I'm not quite sure If I'll go and watch though I just might.

| Silence in Time |
[14 Mar 2009|08:38am] |
I haven't posted in in a long time.
Most of that has to do with the fact that I simply don't have much to say these days, Between work an the null state of my daily existence, I really don't experience much that would be printable here ('cept for rambling and ravings about the compgames I play.... sign, but such an overindulgant expose of my obsessions would no doubt bore you, my reader).
Secondly, someone once told me, "it is better to say nothing that ramble on" (a personal failing of myself), but not saying anything doesn't elicit reactions either, not on the net, and posting empty...., well, you're just wasting space then.
Still, once in a while one needs to post, to indicate the activeness of a blogg.
Tadaa!
So, now this journal has done it's mandatory abcrunches and I'll be signing off. I'm still reading the blogg's, still not dead, will return, yada yada yada.
Till the next message.

Roaming the internet I found something funny that I'd like to share:

It's a short musical about an wanna-be evil scientist and his quest to join an evil society in order to impress Penny, a girl he frequently meets at his local laundromat. His plans are frequently foiled by Do-gooder Captain Hammer though. Things go from bad to worse when his arch-nemesis saves Penny and starts dating her, just to spite Dr. Horrible.
Starring: Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser M.D., Starship Troopers) as Dr Horrible, unsuccessful evil scientist Costarring: Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Buffy) as Captain Hammer,do-gooder and his arch-nemesis Felicia Day (Buffy, Bring It On Again) as Penny, the girl of his dreams
Directed by Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel, Firefly)

The Big Read thinks the average adult has only read six of the top 100 books they've printed below.
1) Look at the list and bold those you have read. 2) Italicise those you intend to read 3) Underline the books you LOVE. 4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them.
( Cut for length ) Hmm 16 out of 100. Not a bad score. I did found several books missing from this list. Frankenstein, Jeckel and Hyde, The Illiad, Beowolf, etc. Of all the religious books only the bible is in the list, I consider that an grave oversight. Why not include the Thora, the Koran, the Mahabharata or the writings of the Daila Lama's on this list? Also no Jules Verne, Poe, Lovecraft or Howart on the list. So much for my childhood.

- Comment and I'll give you a letter. - You'll then have to list 10 things you love that begin with that letter. - You may choose to do it at your journal or leave a comment here. - Afterwards, post this in your journal and give out some letters of your own.
In no particular order:
1) Masticating something scrumptious 2) Movies with a good story (and preferably a happy ending) 3) Minimoni. 4) Mozart's Moonlight Sonata. 5) Miniatures, painting and collecting. 6) Mariner, the Rhyme of the Ancient by Samuel Taylor Coleridge . 7) Meat, any non organ. 8) Mysteries (the solvable kind) 9) Moon, the. My silver companion during my night time voyages. 10) Myself (OK, I know how this sounds, I don't mean it like that. But coming out of a grey and low period in my live that hasn't been kind to my self-esteem, I'm just starting to regain some respect for myself and my live. Plus, I am a firm believer in the quote "Only one who loves himself can truly love an other".)

| Long time no update |
[01 May 2008|03:24pm] |
It's been a while since my last update, and here's why.
First I had nothing to say, but a lot to think about. (some good things, some inconvenient things and some internal struggling, but I'm fine now.) Secondly, I've had some unexpected luck with finding employment. Thanks to an re-integration (into the work force for long-term unemployed people) project, I had two subsidised job offers, whom both showed an intrest in my availability. Not an every day occurrence for me, seeing I've been sitting on my arse for quite a few years now, without any intrest by employers. One employer even left me in charge of the decision to work for them or not. It's just a bit sad, I had to tell them, no. (see good/inconvenient things above). The job I ended up with (or hope to end up with, I still have my trail period ahead of me) is that of night receptionist/security guard at the Ebbingenpoort, a care facility for the elderly. It's about 20 minutes walk from my home, so that's pretty cool.
I'm actually quite jazzed about this.
I've also been mucking around with Steam-punk. But I will place my little trails and errors in that category in different posts for the purpose of cross-posting.
Well, that's it... really...

[23 Feb 2008|11:50am] |
As most of my friends know, I live in Groningen, the Netherlands. And while messing about on Google Earth (love that program) I discovered something I'd like to share.
Other Groningenen I the world:
Groningen is a capital town of Saramacca District, Suriname. It is located at around 5°47′60″N, 55°28′0″W.
Gröningen is a town in the Börde district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It lies approx. 40 km south-west of Magdeburg, and 10 km east of Halberstadt. It has 4,180 inhabitants (December 2004). Gröningen is part of the Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Westliche Börde. A Groningen Minnesoto also popped up on my research, but it appears to be a road. There was a photo, but it was of my hometown, so I can not be shure of the authenticity of this little "fact"
There is also a Groeningen (North Brabant)

Jonathan Coulton - Track 09 - Soft Rocked by Me - [Thing-a-Week Three] |
] |
Recently I started participation on a project of a reintegration agency geared to help long-term unemployed people reintegrate into the workforce through a proces of simple work-tasks and assisted job hunting.
It all started suddenly, I got an invitation for a meeting to determine my situation fitted that of the target group on which the project focused. The answer to that was an enthusiastic positive. (I must note here that most of the directing personal on this project seems to firmly believe in the theories of "positive thinking, hence probably the enthusiasm. I do not share their theories however. More on my disagreements with positive self-delusion in a probable later post though, I don't want to get to far of topic.)
Anyway, I was accepted. Then came my first shock... ( Read more... )

Jonathan Coulton & GLaDOS - Still Alive |

Yesterday, when I awakened, I felt a dull ache in the left part of my jaw. Not a uncommon occurrence, one of my wisdom teeth is coming through on that side, so I dismissed it as such. Last night the pain increased and kept increasing until, through out the night, it grew so annoyingly present, that I was unable to sleep. This morning I called my dentist..... Who (if I had the right clinic) had no record of me and they weren't admitting new clients. So my quest began.
Researching local dentists on the internet, I came to Tandartsencombinatie Geertsema, one of the oldest dentists in Groningen, housed in a stunning monumental house in the center of town. They were admitting clients. I gave them my details and they even had a opening for me in less than an hour. (That's what I call service.)
After a short wait I met my new dentist Mehrdad Shams. He diagnosed my with having a cavity (it wasn't my wisdom tooth after all), which, after X-rays, was immediately stoppered with a temporary filling. His method of work was a bit... brisk. His bedside manner (does that work for dentists? they're doctors after all...) was a bit forced and blunt, but he put a lot of effort went into it, and I can appreciated that. Still, he kept leaning on my lip, which I found somewhat unpleasant. Not as unpleasant as the root-canal treatment I will receive in three weeks, I imagine, but it is an experience I have never before experienced, so in a weird way I am looking forward to it.
The event was slightly marred by the fact that I saw "Groningen's favorite supernatural transvestite" Robin sitting in the waiting room when I came down to make the root-canal appointment.
Well, you can't have everything...
I sure hope the anaesthetic wears off soon, I'm getting thirsty.
18:00 hours (local time): Addendum:
Around /- 15:00 hours the anaesthetic wore off... but the pain was still there, even worse. After a phonecall to my dentist, the emergency dentist line and a return phonecall from my dentist I was suddenly pushed in and have recieved my root-canal immediately. (why wait, anyway.) So a few hours later I am once again sitting behind my comp with half my face inoperative. I have received a prescription for painkillers and I am looking forward to using them if the pain appears still to be there. If it is, I probably go looking yet again for a new dentist.
